In our fire district firefighters are required to give station tours. These may be spur-of-the-moment visits from people who walk in off the street or scheduled visits from organized groups.

These tours are more than just an opportunity to enhance the fire districts public image. They are important opportunities to send a strong safety message and to distribute fire and life safety awareness literature. Whenever we have visitors in our fire stations, firefighters should be dressed appropriately and should conduct themselves with courtesy and professionalism. The impressions our firefighters will make on any visitors will be strong ones, so all television sets should be turned off and other activities should be as positive as possible. Our goal is to project a professional workplace to all visitors that come to our fire stations.

Firefighters should answer all questions to the best of their ability. This is a great time to pass out fire safety and prevention information to visitors. We must be very careful when showing the visitors the fire equipment. When showing them turn out gear, it should be a clean set to show visitors how it looks and feels. This activity can expose children and visitors to fire residue and other contaminants that are unhealthy. It is also very important that after every fire we clean our turn out gear and fire helmets liners to protect us from unhealthy contaminants.

When fire apparatus are demonstrated, take caution to ensure that all visitors are protected from danger. Positioning firefighters at strategic locations will help to prevent visitors from straying into hazardous areas during demonstrations. Appropriate caution should be used when blowing sirens in front of small children because the decibels produced can be harmful to their hearing.

Any time visitors are on station, it is a great way to showcase our firefighters, fire equipment, and stations to the community we serve. This is the best job in the world. Let us reflect to the public we serve how blessed we are.
